July 29, 1997 LOTTERY WIN FOR
MADE IN SHEFFIELD DOT COM
Internet company Made In Sheffield
Dot Com
has won the lottery. The Orchard Square company
has been awarded
a National Lottery grant to fund an on-line arts
directory and events
diary covering the Sheffield area.
The Internet
directory (at www.made-in-sheffield.com\arts)
will list local artists, craftworkers and
designers, including specialists
in textiles, ceramics, wood, glass and jewellery
and will link to an arts
diary promoting the region's creative events. The
grant, of almost £5,000,
was awarded through the Arts Council's Arts for
Everyone (A4E) scheme.
Made In Sheffield
Managing Director Wendi Hebb
has worked as a costume jeweller for 13 years and
co-owns Jujube
Jewellery in Orchard Square. She said: "The
grant offers a marvellous
opportunity to promote the region's smaller
manufacturers. Everyone I have
spoken to within the local crafts community
believes the project will
establish new markets for their products."
Yorkshire Artspace
Society Development and
Projects Director Kate Dore, who supported the
bid, said: "Local artists
often find it very difficult to sell work, so
this initiative will be a great help
in presenting their work to an international
audience for the first time ever."
The Made In
Sheffield web site, to be launched
this autumn, will also host a Cyberstore selling
around 200 Sheffield-made
goods from 26 of the city's manufacturers and
craftworkers.
Said Wendi:
"Both the Cyberstore and arts directory
will enable Sheffield manufacturers to join
together under the umbrella of
'Made In Sheffield' so all can benefit from the
interest generated by the
launch of the web site."
Craftspeople who
wish to be included in the free
directory should contact Made In Sheffield Dot
Com on 0114 249 3770.
Ends.
