Sheffield's
Mappin Art Gallery in Weston Park is named after the nineteenth
century art collector John Newton Mappin. Mappin was born in Sheffield,
the son of a fruit knife maker and engraver, and made his fortune
as a brewery owner.
But his great
passion was art and by the time of his death he had collected more
than 170 pictures which were said to be worth £100,000. In his will,
Mappin left £15,000 for the building of the Art Gallery, which was
completed three years after his death, and also donated his collection
of paintings.
Mappin also
made many contributions to the church, including £14,000 for the
building of St John's Church, Ranmoor. And in 1857 he donated money
for the central east window in Sheffield's Cathedral.
