Hallamshire Historic Buildings Society
Saving Sheffield's Heritage
Certain listed buildings in Sheffield
are threatened, either with alterations, or worse, with demolition. Below
are a number that are causing disquiet to the Hallamshire
Historic Buildings Society:
Shude Hill Warehouse
Is a Grade II * listed building, although demolition has started on this building,
the HHBS is working hard to get it stopped. Plans show that in its place Hotel
Ibis intend to have built a large low budget hotel of extremely poor architecture,
with no relationship to the very fine Gas Offices building (Grade II *) to which
it is attached.
Broom Hall
The very beautiful grounds of Broom Hall, a listed Grade II * building, the
earlier portion being built in the time of Henry VIII, that is from 1509-1547,
is threatened by an application by the owner asking for permission to build a
two storey office block opposite the Hall. As a previous owner had been refused
permission to build a similar office block in 1972, the HHBS has great hopes that
this application will be turned down.
City Hall
The City Hall, listed Grade II *, designed by E. Vincent Harris, and opened in
1934, is on the danger list. The building has been sadly neglected and many
cracks are appearing and much restoration is urgently needed. The HHBS is using
all its influence to save this very fine building.
