Sandra Howard - "Pride
of Britain"
Fundraiser of the Year 1999
How
did Sheffield born Sandra get involved with Fable?
Sandra's son Gareth, now
aged 20 was diagnosed as severely epileptic.
She discovered that there
was a new treatment available which could help Gareth, but it was
not available on the NHS.
Sandra was not deterred
by this and decided to begin to raise the money herself.
Sandra raised the funds
for Gareth to have a Vagus nerve stimulator implanted into his body.
The operation was a huge success
and Gareth now lives an almost fit free life.
She realised that there
are other families faced with a similar situation as her own and
decided to set up her own charity,
F.A.B.L.E.This stands for "For A Better Life wth Epilepsy
and has raised over £200,000 in 4 years
By the end of June 1999,
FABLE will have provided 18 implants for young people with epilepsy
and hope to raise funds for a further four this year. Hospital Consultants
all over Britain now applying to FABLE for funds if they are unable
to recieve treatment from the NHS.
Sandra works voluntarily
five days a week for the Charity, and enlists family, friends and
anyone who would like to help on the same basis. She soon intends
to start raising money to open a respite care holiday home for young
epileptics, and is the first initiative of its kind in the UK.
FABLE run a shop selling
second hand items to support the running of the charity. They are
always looking for donations of goods. The contact telephone number
is 0800-521-629
