J.
Edward Vickers MBE
Made
in Sheffield Dot Com has been greatly assisted in our research by
J. Edward Vickers MBE, a well known Sheffield historian.
He was born
in 1917 and studied art and architecture at the Sheffield School
of Art. Enlisting with the Hallamshire Battalion of the Territorial
Army in 1938, he was called to the colours immediately the Second
World War began. He served throughout the war, seeing service in
Norway, Iceland, North Africa, Italy and Austria. He married his
wife, Ruby, in 1941 and they have three sons and a granddaughter.
After the war
he was a tutor of Sheffield History for Adult Education until retirement.
He is a member of the Society of Architectural Historians and of
the Hunter Archaeological Society. As a founder member of the Hallamshire
Historic Buildings Society and now its Vice President, he has
assisted in the saving of many of the historic buildings of the
city.
For his work
on the history of Sheffield and the conservation of many of its
buildings he was awarded the MBE by Her Majesty the Queen in 1994.
