Emlyn Hughes
OBE
(1947-Present Day)
Emlyn was born
in Barrow-in-Furness on the 28th August 1947 and is married with
two children. The son of an international rugby player, he started
his football career in the Barrow youth ranks before signing professional
terms with Blackpool football club. In 1967, only 29 first division
games later, he was transferred to Liverpool football club for £65,000,
the start of an era in which he played 650 games. He lead them as
Captain to achieve numerous footballing honours, as well as taking
England in the same direction.
In 1979 when
"Crazy Horse" appeared to be in the twilight of his career, Wolverhampton
Wanderers acquired him to rebuild their team. In his first season
with Wolves, he led them to win the League cup (the only trophy
never won with Liverpool).
In 1980 he was
awarded the OBE in recognition of his services to soccer.
The success
of his media career following his retirement from football, has
been quite remarkable, His witty and e nthusiastic appearances as
Team Captain on "Question of Sport" and "Sporting Triangles" have
established Emlyn as one of the country's most popular television
personalities.
He is also acknowledged
as one of the best Motivational and After Dinner Speakers in Britain.
Much of his material is gleaned from his playing career as Captain
of Liverpool and England and memories and anecdotes of his mentor,
the late, great Bill Shankly. These recollections illustrate his
humour, determination and love for sport in general.
Allthough not
born in Sheffield, Emlyn has been chief patron to Sheffield based
charity F.A.B.L.E.
For A Better Life with Epilepsy since 1995. We feel Emlyn's involvement
with the charity and his continued support for the City of Sheffield
make him worthy of inclusion in our Hall of Fame as an honourary
"Sheffielder".
