Background
The UK has a household waste problem of epic proportions.
Its residents produce 20 million tons of waste a year, which is enough
to fill Wembley stadium over 385 times - this figure is growing all the
time.
Presently more than 90 per cent of this rubbish is buried at landfill sites.
We live in an age of rapid technological advancement where almost
nothing seems
impossible - yet we dispose of our rubbish by burying it
under the ground.
Sheffield Heat & Power are helping to minimise the impact
that using
landfill space and burning fossil fuel has on the environment.
Through
incineration of domestic waste, collected in Sheffield, steam is
generated and
then transformed into hot water. This is pumped through
a network of pre-insulated
underground pipes to supply heat and hot
water to a growing proportion of City
centre buildings.
By switching from traditional fossil fuel energy sources,
Sheffield Heat & Power
consumers have helped to significantly reduce
harmful polluting emissions at the same
time as receiving many added
benefits. Buildings such as Ponds Forge International
Sports Centre,
Barclays Bank and Weston Park Hospital now enjoy an efficient,
reliable
and environmentally friendly heating option.
There are 3000 dwellings and over 100 city centre buildings connected to
the Green heat network. To see a selection of these buildings
